<aside> š” My name is Nurfaiz Foat, and Iām a Product Designer based in Malaysia, currently seeking a new opportunity to further develop my skills. I noticed there is an opening for a Product Designer position at Gumroad. To apply for this position, I am submitting this application along with a complete task that involves planning and outlining the design aspects of Gumroadās new tipping feature. This case study serves as my sincere application.

In Gumroad's Q2 2024 Public Board Meeting video on YouTube, it was noted that the current trend indicates a decline in the purchase of digital products. As a result, offering services as a product is emerging as a promising opportunity for creators to generate income.
Sahil mentioned the 3Cs approach to address this shift, which includes Coffee, Commission, and Calls. 'Coffee' refers to tipping, which is specifically designed to complement other existing listing options for creators.
Typically, a tipping experience in real life occurs just before the service is completed. However, based on my observations and the information shared in the Public Board Meeting video, this new tipping feature (referred to as 'Coffee') should be viewed as one of the products in a creatorās listing. Therefore, I don't think this will be that hard to design.
We just need to position it as a product that allows fans, customers, or subscribers to support and send tips to their chosen creators.
Additionally, the Hiring Page for this position suggests that the tipping feature 'Coffee' could be combined with the existing 'Upsell' flow during the checkout process. We may explore this option shortly.
In this case study, Iāll look into the Coffee (Tipping) feature and try to come out with a complete process from the ideation, user interaction, low fidelity wireframes and ultimately high fidelity mockups.
Since Iām considering this as a design challenge exercise, I need to gather as much information as possible. To do so, I'm paying close attention to both the written assignment and the Public Board Meeting materials. I have also decided to do a competitor analysis to gauge what are the basic practices in doing tipping in online creatorās market.
I narrowed it down into three which are; 1ļøā£ buymeacoffee 2ļøā£ ko-fi 3ļøā£ Tipeee

As a designer who was not involved in the full ideation process for the 3Cs approach, I am then carefully studying Gumroadās existing UX flow, from browsing the listings, understanding the Help Center and to the checkout process. My goal is to determine the best placement for the tipping 'Coffee' feature.
My Early Assumptions
